Sauna or Steam Room for Your Home? A Room-by-Room Guide

Stove-heated indoor sauna room with an electric heater, glass door and hemlock benches in a Malaysian home

You know you want heat at home. The question is whether a sauna or steam room is the one to build, and the honest answer depends on the room you have, not on which one is "better". This guide walks through the places people put them, what each one costs to build and keep running, and how to decide in a weekend instead of a year.

In short:For most Malaysian homes a sauna room is the easier choice: it needs a power point and no plumbing, and a 100 × 100 cm unit fits a condo corner. Choose a steam room when you are already renovating a bathroom and want wet heat, or choose the dry and wet sauna steam room for both.

Start with the room, not the product

Walk to the spot you have in mind and answer three things. Is there a drain within reach? Is there a power point, or can one be added? Does the space have to stay a bathroom, or can it be a cabin?

If there is no drain, you have your answer: a sauna room. If the spot is a bathroom you are about to renovate, a steam room is on the table. If it is a spare room, a corner of a home gym or a garden, a sauna room wins on effort every time.

Condo or apartment

A condo almost always points to an infrared sauna room or a small stove-heated sauna. A single-seat unit is 100 × 100 × 200 cm, runs off a power point, and carries in through a normal door and lift.

A steam room in a condo means waterproofing, a drain and a generator inside a sealed bathroom, and the management will want to see the plan. It is possible. It is just a bigger job for the same half hour of heat.

One more condo check: the quote lists the heater load, so you can clear it with the JMB before the delivery date is set.

Landed home, indoors

With a spare room you can have the full stove-heated sauna experience: a 220 × 220 cm room for the family, a glass wall facing the pool, Harvia or Sawo stones and a bucket for löyly.

This is also the home where the dry and wet sauna steam room makes sense. It is an indoor cabin that runs dry or wet, so you get a steam session without tiling a bathroom. The sauna room with a shower built in is the other favourite for a landed home: step out of the heat and straight under the water.

Garden or backyard

Outdoors is sauna territory. A barrel sauna or an outdoor sauna cabin sits on a deck or a slab, takes a power run or a VAPA wood stove, and needs no drain. Every outdoor cabin we build carries an asphalt-shingle roof and waterproof paint on all four sides for Malaysian rain.

A steam room outdoors is rare for a reason: it needs water, drainage and a sealed shell, and the humidity has nowhere to go. If you want wet and cold outside, pair the sauna with an ice bath instead.

What they cost to build and run

Our sauna rooms start from RM26,000 supplied and installed, with the price fixed in writing after a free site visit. A steam room is priced on the bathroom work as much as the generator, so it varies more; ask for both numbers on the same visit if you are torn.

Running costs follow the heater. A home sauna heater is typically in the 3 to 9 kW range and runs for a timed session, so a half-hour sauna uses a few kilowatt-hours. A steam generator runs longer to build up, and the room has to dry afterwards. Both are small next to an air-conditioner left on all night.

Decide in a weekend

Day one: take a photo of the spot and measure it roughly. Day two: send it to us on WhatsApp with one line about what you want from the heat, dry or wet. We come over for free, check the power point and the carry-in, and the quote comes back in writing.

If the difference between the two heats is still fuzzy, read the plain explanation of steam room vs sauna first. If space is your worry, the sauna room dimensions guide shows what fits where.

Questions people ask

Can a steam room go in a condo?

It can, but it needs a waterproofed bathroom, a drain, a steam generator with water supply and the management's approval. A sauna room needs only a power point, which is why most condo owners choose it.

Which is cheaper to run, a sauna or a steam room?

Usually the sauna. The heater runs for a timed session and the room needs no drying out afterwards. A steam generator runs longer to build up heat and the room must dry after every use.

Can I have both?

Yes. The dry and wet sauna steam room is one indoor hemlock cabin that runs as a dry sauna or a wet steam room, from 100 × 100 cm up to 220 × 220 cm.

What do I send to get a price?

One photo of the spot and a rough size on WhatsApp. We visit for free, measure, check the power point and send the sauna room price in writing.
